Environment / Sustainability

The Pitchfork Music Festival takes our responsibility to the environment seriously, and encourages our audience, performing artists, and PMF vendors to do the same. Following is a brief summary of some steps we're taking to ensure that our environmental "footprint" is as small as possible!

Recycling
One of the biggest problems when 50,000 people come together for a weekend of music and fun is waste – festivals produce plenty of it.

In 2008, The Pitchfork Music Festival got together with students from IIT's Environmental Management program to develop and implement a comprehensive recycling program to limit what we send to landfill. Our festival recycling crew works with all of our festival vendors to help them recycle as much as possible, and we need YOUR help, too! If you attend, please recycle your plastic cups and bottles, along with any aluminum cans and clean paper-based materials, in one of the many recycling receptacles that will be provided throughout the Festival grounds.

Also, save up your cups – and your friends cups – and trade them in at the PMF Recycling Store for Festival-related gear!

Last year we recycled 40% of all waste generated, and this year we want to work with you to improve that to over 50%!

Biking, Walking, and Public Transportation
PMF provides free and secure bicycle parking at the south end of the festival site, and encourages attendees to bike, walk, or take the bus or train to and from the Festival. To help plan your trip, visit www.transitchicago.com and/or www.metrarail.com to view bus and train schedules and maps.

Biodiesel Power
All power for the event comes from biodiesel fuel, which is cleaner-burning than normal diesel and lowers demand for foreign oil. Visit www.biodiesel.org for more information on this energy source.

Hybrid Vehicles
PMF needs to move a lot of people and equipment over the course of the Festival weekend, so we forged a partnership with ZipCar (www.zipcar.com). ZipCar is a car-sharing service that helps folks enjoy the benefits of driving occasionally without having to own their own car. ZipCar will provide us with eco-friendly hybrid vehicles for PMF operations this year.

Carbon Offsets
The very nature of such a large gathering clearly has negative impacts on our surrounding environment. All the airplane, van, and car miles that bring bands and fans from around the globe combine to contribute significantly to the pressing problem of climate change.

One way to promote new projects that fight climate change is the purchase of "carbon offsets." An offset is equal to the reduction of over 2,200 pounds of carbon dioxide, the principle cause of global warming. Individuals, organizations, and companies can purchase a certain amount of offsets to, well, "offset" the global warming emissions they’ve created.

We've researched different companies that do good work in the carbon offset market, ones that make sure people are able to see where their money is going.

TerraPass (www.terrapass.com) is one of the best companies out there; you can visit their Web site to calculate your travel emissions and then purchase offsets at a very reasonable price (for example, a person flying round trip from New York to Chicago should be able to offset their flights for just a few dollars). TerraPass publishes all of their past and present offset projects so you can see where your offset purchase is going.

We know environmental issues, particularly climate change, are important to many of you, and they are very important to us, too. Carbon offsets are another creative way to reduce your environmental "footprint!"
